World-leading professional body

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is the world's largest and most influential professional body for construction management. With around 50,000 members located in 100 countries, it represents the science, ethics, and practice of the built environment worldwide.

Upholding industry standards, the CIOB ensures the safety of those constructing and residing in buildings, while training future leaders and seamlessly connecting all aspects of the sector.

Members have access to over 500 CPD and networking events annually, discussion opportunities via online forums and private groups, training courses, mentoring and support.

Delivering the modernisation plan

With a five-year plan, the CIOB wanted to make modern professionalism a reality across the construction industry.

The institute first needed to deliver an excellent member experience, which would increase its membership further. It also had to demonstrate the financial and social benefits of delivering a modern professional body that could provide forward-thinking, personalised services while achieving process efficiencies.

The transition was ambitious, yet absolutely necessary.

A crucial aspect of the plan was that the CIOB needed to develop a new CRM and online portal as part of a digital transformation project. It called this - Project Apollo. Given the timing of membership renewals, the new system had to be completed by October 2024. There was no wiggle room at all.

A long-term digital partner

Intercloud9 supported the internal CIOB project team from the outset. This is a specialist consultancy for membership organisations, and its brief was to close the gap between business requirements and available technology. In such a complex industry, it’s all too easy to select inappropriate providers and fail to deliver on your objectives.

After a formal tender the CIOB selected Bluelight to work on Project Apollo. Given the ambitious overhaul of legacy CIOB systems, the institute chose several partners to ensure every aspect was capably covered.

The first step was to create a transparent and collaborative approach to progressing the project. No strangers to collaboration, Bluelight worked with the CIOB and other partners to establish an aligned implementation plan for their part of Project Apollo – designing and implementing a perfect-fit BlueCRM system.

It’s worth noting the timeframe at this point. Implementation started in January 2024. The project had to be completed – without fail – by October 2024. This was a huge undertaking given the amount of work involved.

The Bluelight team followed a structured implementation process, involving the CIOB at all stages. And yet, there was always flexibility when changes became necessary. With such a fast-moving project, communication was key. The CIOB provided prompt feedback, helping Bluelight keep the transformation on-track.

Delivered on time and on budget

Due to the criticality of going live in October because of membership renewals, the CIOB created several contingencies in case the project was delayed. But it wasn’t. Bluelight and the team completed Project Apollo on time and on budget.

The CIOB now has a modern, digital platform to help grow its professional services and membership size. But that’s not all. This digital transformation project achieved further benefits for the institute.

Bluelight successfully and accurately migrated a substantial volume of data to SharePoint. This strategic move improved operating efficiencies by significantly reducing data storage costs and securing more of the CIOB’s data in one secure location.

Team members who would use BlueCRM received training and support from Bluelight. This ensured they bought into the new system and got the most from it as quickly as possible.

Finally, as BlueCRM is a feature-rich standard product, the CIOB benefit from having widely understood functionality. This means other technology partners can provide easier support and maintenance going forward.
